Levy Court to acquire Hunn property
(DOVER, DE.) - - The Levy Court approved the allocation of $194,500 for the purchase of the Shirley Hunn property located on Sorghum Mill road off Route 10 in Lebanon. The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control will purchase the 172.6 acres of land at a total cost of $488, 943 using money from Kent County, the Water and Conservation Trust Fund, and the State Open Space Program. The land will then be turned over the County.
Future plans for the property call for the Manor House, which was once an underground rail road safe house with a tunnel that led to the St. Jones River, to be preserved. Kent County is currently in discussion with Delaware State University to convert the house into an interpretive center which celebrates the rich history of the property in Kent County.
Acquiring the Hunn property will also allow Kent County to provide additional recreation opportunities over a period of time to include athletic fields and a four acre fishing pond. The property will also be used to link the St. Jones Greenway trail to the Lebanon Landing boat dock.
